Graphic Design Glossary

Logo – a company’s name designed as the company’s trademark
Icon – a company’s trademark, not including the company’s name
Monogram – Initials (IBM, CNN etc.)
Pictogram – a conventional sign, e.g. a knife and a fork = a restaurant
Brain storming – coming up with a concept in advertising
Collage – numerous photographs cut out and combined in one composition
Photo-montage – two negatives placed one on the other
Intersection – cutting a certain element off of a photograph
Popularization – mainstream, low-level culture
Overflow – a certain element (letter, photograph or illustration) that goes out of the given format, where as a result, a part of the image is cut off
Overlay – printing beyond the format margins and crop-marks
A hole in the composition – a situation where the eye strolls across a poster and suddently stops at a certain point without being able to move forward to other places
Highlight – A very light spot
Monochrome – one color (mono=one, chrome=color)
Flip horizontal or vertical – making a “mirror image”, rotating the image by 180 degrees horizontally or vertically
